It\u2019s one of Oaxaca City\u2019s most popular caf\u00e9s, and for good reason. They\u2019ve got two locations plus a bakery right next door to the one in the center of town (and yes, I tried them all\u2014in the name of research, of course!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their menu has something for everyone: all-day breakfasts, fresh salads, hearty sandwiches, and more pastries than you can count. My favorites? A mushroom, spinach and cheese focaccia, and a colorful yogurt bowl loaded with fresh fruit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easily one of the best breakfasts (or lunches!) in town. It\u2019s filled with native Oaxacan plants, from spiky agave and towering cacti to rare trees you won\u2019t see anywhere else. The only way to visit is on a guided tour (about 50 pesos), and most are in Spanish\u2014but don\u2019t let that stop you! It\u2019s housed inside a former monastery, so even before you step inside, the architecture alone is worth admiring. Inside, you\u2019ll find everything from Mixtec treasures (including gold from Monte Alb\u00e1n!) to exhibits that beautifully tell the story of Oaxaca\u2019s deep cultural roots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t skip the upper floors\u2014the views from the windows are absolutely breathtaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-global-color-7-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-global-color-7-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lunch at Tacos Chemita<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For a quick, no-fuss lunch in Oaxaca, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tacos_chemitaoax\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tacos Chemita<\/strong><\/a> is a local favorite. Just a few minutes walk from the Museum of Cultures, this taqueria is all about quality\u2014especially their <strong>al pastor tacos<\/strong>, cooked to perfection on a rotating spit right in front of you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also serve suadero, tripa, and steak tacos, plus the hearty <strong>chemita alambres<\/strong>, loaded with pastor, chile de agua, avocado, onions, peppers, bacon, and cheese. You\u2019ll find handwoven totes, embroidered bags, salsa bowls, keychains, and yes\u2014even live animals! Don\u2019t miss the <strong>nieve<\/strong> (Oaxacan-style ice cream); my favorite spot was <strong>Chag\u00fcita<\/strong> (stall #27), where locals line up for flavors like tuna (prickly pear), donaj\u00ed (lime &amp; mezcal), and beso oaxaque\u00f1o (a tropical fruit mix). We ended up lingering thanks to the cozy atmosphere, live music, and expertly crafted cocktails.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their mezcal selection is superb, craft beers are solid, and there are even a few great wines if that\u2019s more your style (that\u2019s what i had!). The traditional pozole was so good, I even went back for a second helping before leaving town! But honestly, we came for the pozole and stayed for everything else.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>memelas with asiento, beans, and cheese<\/strong> were simple yet packed with flavor, and the rest of the menu is full of Oaxacan staples\u2014huitlacoche, squash blossoms, fresh herbs\u2014and plenty of <strong>house-made tortillas<\/strong> to scoop it all up. The pastries are almost too pretty to eat\u2026 <em>almost.<\/em> You\u2019ve gotta try the <strong>morning bun with jam\u00f3n serrano<\/strong>\u2014savory, buttery perfection\u2014and if they\u2019ve got the <strong>rhubarb compote Danish with hibiscus<\/strong>, don\u2019t even hesitate. Some are bold and political, others are sweet and whimsical, but all of them tell a story about Oaxaca\u2019s culture and soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took a free walking tour with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oaxacabylocals.com\/jalatlaco-street-art-walking-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oaxaca by Locals<\/a>, and it made such a difference knowing the meaning behind the art (highly recommend!). But honestly, you could just stroll down Calle Aldama and its side streets and still see tons of incredible pieces. Bring your camera\u2014you\u2019ll want to stop every few feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and if you need a little caffeine kick before or after your walk, grab a coffee at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/once.in.oaxaca\/?hl=en\">Once In Oaxaca<\/a>\u2014it\u2019s one of my favorite cozy caf\u00e9s in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-global-color-7-background-color has-background\">\u279e Bonus tip: If you have extra time during your 3-day itinerary, check out the street art in Xochimilco too. Chef Aubrey welcomed us into her home like old friends\u2014warm hugs, mezcal in hand, and the sweetest stories about her grandmother\u2019s recipes that have been passed down for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We kicked things off with a cup of rich Oaxacan hot chocolate and a tasting of local fruits like zapote negro and pineapple mango (Aubrey even showed us how to squish the mango just right before biting the top and sipping out the juice\u2014it was so fun and so messy!). After a few snacks of roasted nuts and plantains, we tied on traditional aprons and got cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our group of seven made chileajo, chile relleno stuffed with chicken picadillo, and two kinds of salsa. We chopped, stirred, laughed, and sipped mezcal the whole way through. Aubrey and her husband made us feel like part of their family\u2014and by the end of the night, it truly felt like we were. I took a 3-hour class at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/20_20artecontemporaneo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Galer\u00eda 20-20<\/strong><\/a>, and it ended up being one of my favorite creative experiences in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started by learning basic engraving techniques, practiced on a test board (which made me realize this art form takes patience!), and then created our own design to print and take home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Come prepared with a design idea\u2014it\u2019s surprisingly hard to come up with something on the spot. And since your print needs about 8 hours to dry, plan to swing back later to pick it up. It\u2019s even made the list of the <strong>World\u2019s Top 50 Bars<\/strong>\u2014and once you sip one of their creations, you\u2019ll totally get why. The place is small and stylish (so expect a little wait), but the vibe is worth every minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ordered the <strong>Paloma Margarita<\/strong>, a delicious twist with Espol\u00f3n blanco, Campari, Aperol, citrus, and grapefruit\u2014it was perfection in a glass. The <strong>Guayabo Verde<\/strong> is another standout: light, herbal, and refreshingly unique with mezcal, guava, basil, and tonic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, there\u2019s this one piece of art on the wall that I couldn\u2019t stop staring at. Their shaded terrace feels relaxed and local, but the real star here is the <strong>mole<\/strong>\u2014especially the smoky, rich <em>mole negro<\/em> that\u2019s so flavorful it practically stands on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with the <strong>molotes de pl\u00e1tano<\/strong>\u2014crispy fried plantains stuffed with savory meat and topped with sweet red mole (they\u2019re addictive!). This all-sourdough bakery is where I had one of my favorite breakfasts in Oaxaca. The yogurt bowl is my go-to\u2014it\u2019s piled high with fresh fruit, crunchy granola, and cacao nibs, the perfect mix of healthy and indulgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you <em>have<\/em> to try their pastries too. The croissants are flakey perfection, and the savory scones and focaccia? Unreal. I joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viator.com\/tours\/Oaxaca-City\/Mezcalera-Route-in-Santiago-Matatlan-and-San-Pablo-Villa-de-Mitla\/d50491-327728P1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">The Mezcal Journey<\/a> tour, and it was a fascinating experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We watched every step of the process\u2014from roasting agave hearts in underground pits to crushing them with a horse-drawn stone wheel and distilling by hand. At 6:30 PM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/luchasenoaxaca\/?locale=es_LA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arena Oaxaca<\/a> turns into a whirlwind of acrobatics, drama, and pure fun with Lucha Libre\u2014Mexico\u2019s beloved (and totally over-the-top) wrestling spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll see the Rudos (bad guys) battle the T\u00e9cnicos (good guys) in five matches of three rounds each, and trust me\u2014they get better and crazier as the night goes on. Sit in the front row if you can for the full experience, but heads up: wrestlers do sometimes go flying into the crowd (I definitely had to duck more than once).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the final match ends and the crowd goes wild, it\u2019s tradition to toss coins\u2014or even paper pesos\u2014onto the mat to show your love. It\u2019s got that perfect mix of mid-century cool and Oaxacan soul\u2014think lush greenery, warm lighting, and just the right amount of buzz in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cocktails are as beautiful as they are creative, all inspired by local ingredients and flavors. I ordered their signature Selva (mezcal, hoja santa, chile liqueur, basil, and more), and honestly, it tasted like Oaxaca in a glass. The ceviche was bright and zesty, and the <strong><em>tamal de mole negro<\/em><\/strong>? Yummy. Mole is a big deal in Oaxaca\u2014each region has its own version\u2014but the mole negro is the one everyone talks about.
