The Dead Sea<\/a> and ancient Petra ruins<\/a> are what the middle eastern country of Jordan is primarily known for\u2014and trust me, they are absolutely two of the top things to do before you die<\/a>! But, there is also one of my favorite unexpected treasures nearby\u2014Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To get the ultimate experience in the 720 square kilometers of heart stopping desert landscape, you must do overnight stays at one on the Bedouin camps. I promise it will be an experience you will not forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evenings by the campsite in combination with the traditional food and the spectacular views you\u2019ll have of the surrounding desert as soon as you step out of your tent make for a truly epic experience you can only get to enjoy in this area of Jordan. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Wadi Rum Desert?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Located in the southern part of Jordan is a vast desert, made of red sand and rock formations shaped so strangely they look like something out of this planet. This is the Wadi Rum Desert, also nicknamed as Valley of the Moon by those who have visited before. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a special and popular location to visit and protect for a number of reasons. First, due to its red appearance coupled with the impressive sandstone mountains, you will feel as if you stepped through a portal and arrived on Mars. Due to its landscape and color scheme, it has also been featured as a location in numerous famous films, such as <\/span>The Martian<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its dramatic panoramic land is where you can follow the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia, ride camels through the sun-kissed desert and be amongst the semi-nomadic Bedouin people who still live in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Besides being an exceptional treat for film buffs, Jordan Wadi Rum is also important for culture and world history. It boasts thousands upon thousands of rock carvings, inscriptions, and archeological sites, offering insight on the evolution of earliest forms of alphabet and human way of thinking. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rock carvings (aka petroglyphs) span through eras from Neolithic all the way to Nabataean. From these petroglyphs, it is also possible to view the way climate has changed over time. Meanwhile, the inscriptions feature four different scripts, showcasing how widespread the literacy rate was in the ancient societies inhabiting the Arabian Peninsula. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Camping in Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just like with everything else you will experience during your trip to Jordan, time at a Wadi Rum camp is a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list<\/a> experience. There are dozens of tented campsites spread out in the over 400 square miles of desert, and it’s an adventure to spend even one night at one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a typical evening there will a campfire, traditional Jordanian food, hookah smoking and stargazing\u2014not to mention all the sightseeing fun during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Captains Desert Camp<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Captains Desert Camp<\/a> is the camp I stayed in during my visit to Wadi Rum Desert. These camps are eco-friendly, using solar power as their source of energy, and they also offer a variety of tours, such as camel riding, desert jeep rides, hot air balloon rides, hiking trips, and even arrangements to visit Petra.<\/p>\n\n\n

Typical Camping Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To get started on your camping experience, you\u2019ll have to enter Wadi Rum through the Visitor\u2019s Center, with the entrance fee being around $7. From there you\u2019ll continue onto your camp. You\u2019ll be assigned a tent based on your booking, and you can go explore your surroundings immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n

Most camps offer you meals during the day, and dinner is often a favorite among guests. Besides dining, there\u2019s often a little party of sorts held in the main tent, complete with Bedouin tea, shisha, and the like. There\u2019ll probably also be a bonfire outdoors where you can socialize, and most of all listen to Bedouin stories and songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the daytime you can join different types of tours, from simple camel tours to more thorough 4×4 tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
